A MAN is fighting for his life after falling from a city bridge.

Police have taped off part of Maybray King Way between Lance's Hill and the slip road for West End Road following the incident.

Officers were called by the ambulance service shortly before 7am today after the man fell from the bridge over Bitterne Road close to Angel Crescent.

The man has been taken to hospital by ambulance having suffered serious and possibly life threatening injuries.

The ambulance service were flagged down by members of the public.

Police are keen to speak to these people as they may be able to provide information about what has happened.

Daily Echo:

The bridge remains taped off on one side as worried-looking commuters pass by on foot and in cars.

A small section of the slip road below is also cordoned off with a police van at both scenes.

Four officers are at the scene in total.

But early morning shoppers heading into Bitterne Precinct remain confused about the situation.

One shop assistant said: "Everyone who's come in this morning has been saying "what's going on up there," but we haven't heard a thing."

Another shopper, who asked not to be named, said: "It's awful when you hear about this sort of thing. I hope he is ok."

Daily Echo:

A cleaner who works in West End Road said she had been near the bridge moments before the incident but had no clue anything was going on.

She said: "I came over the bridge around 6.45am and the whole area was clear. It was a real shock later on when people were coming in the shop saying something had happened there because it was cut off by police.

"I haven't a clue what happened but it was all quiet when I walked past."

Daily Echo:

Another shop worker added: "I thought someone might be hurt when I was driving in as there were police below the bridge and debris on the ground; carrier bags and rubbish.

"Then when I drove up here the bridge was all taped off. People are coming in asking about it but no one seems to know what happened.
