SHE has always lived within a mile of the house she was born in, and now Betty Blundell is celebrating her 100th birthday.

The great-grandmother-of-two was born in St Mary’s, Southampton, on December 15, 1914.

The former St Mary’s School girl worked for cable manufacturer Pirelli until her first child was born in 1941. She later worked as a cleaner for Southampton City College and Ordnance Survey before retiring in her 70s.

The mum-of-two has survived all 11 of her siblings and her husband John, whom she married in 1939.

Betty celebrated her landmark birthday last night surrounded by more than 50 friends and family, including her daughters Ann Brien and Jacky Lyons, at the Royal British Legion Club in Eastgate Street, Southampton.
