Work is set to begin on a scheme to curb parking chaos in a Hampshire village.

Roads chiefs have agreed a plan to increase spaces for the hundreds of motorists who stop in Titchfield village centre every day.

Residents have praised the move which should make it easier for people using the shops, schools and community centre.

Work is set to start in the next few weeks to add eight car parking spaces to The Square, bringing the total number of spaces to 13.

These will be restricted to 30 minutes at a time, between 8am and 6pm, seven days a week. There will also be a designated space for motorbikes.

Titchfield Community Centre will have an extra 25 to 30 spaces in the long-stay car park. Permit holders who use the Barry’s Meadow car park will be asked to park at the community centre instead.

Fareham Borough Council will review the changes after one year.

The plans were agreed at an executive council meeting with work to be completed by the summer.

Suzanne Barlow, 28, a nurse from Titchfield Common, said: “It sounds like a good idea to me, especially in the Square because it might mean you can actually park. I usually can’t park in the Square at all. I normally have to go elsewhere.”

Richard Smith, 55, who works as a carpet fitter in Titchfield, added: “I think it’s quite good. It seems like they’re showing an interest in people here. You have to arrive as early as possible if you work here.”
