A WELL-known former businessman has died aged 93.

John Hillier who lived at Carters Clay in Lockerley worked at the Church Street-based gentlemen’s tailor and outfitters E & B Butcher Ltd for 48 years. He started out as an apprentice and when the business closed in May 1984, John was director and manager of the shop.

Awbridge-born John was the eldest of eight children and he went to school in the village and left education when he was 14 years old.

John was involved in many organisations in and around Romsey including Romsey Horticultural Society, the Rotary Club of Romsey, where he was a president for a time, Romsey and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Romsey Probus Club where he was a past president.
