DETECTIVES are today continuing to investigate a serious daytime knife attack in a Southampton community.

Four people have been arrested following the stabbing on the Golden Grove estate in the centre of the city.

The 34-year-old victim received serious injuries the chest.

No one else was injured in the incident, which happened shortly after 9am yesterday.

A short while later, officers in riot gear forced entry into another block of flats on the estate.

Police were on the scene for most of the day as they carried out their investigations.

Last night four people were in police custody after they arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The people arrested were a 42-year-old woman, a 24-year-old woman, a 37-year-old man - all from Southampton - and a 21-year-old man from London.

Daily Echo:

Officers had not been able to speak to the victim last night while he was recovering from the ordeal in hospital.

Although his injuries are serious they are not thought to be life threatening

Many residents who had been out during the day returned to find officers combing the area and searching for clues.

Throughout the day more than 30 officers were at the scene and last night crime scenes on the estate were still being guarded.

Eighteen year-old Charlotte Hancock from Golden Grove, said she saw police searching the area.

She said: “I saw the police this morning but we didn't know what it was about. We just saw them looking for something in the bushes at the bottom of the flats. I thought they were looking for a weapon.”

Another neighbour, Noel Lyle-Stirling, 64, (picitured beow) said: “I'm shocked and I am angry.”

Southampton City Councillor Matt Tucker and ward councillor for the area expressed his shock.

He said: “That's pretty scary stuff. I'm quite devastated to hear that this incident has happened.”

Cllr Tucker urged anyone who had any information about what had happened to contact the police.

Daily Echo:

Southampton City Councillor John Noon, who has lived on the estate for more than a decade, defended the area saying he found living there “very safe”.

He said: “I think it would alarm anyone. I would say it's a relatively quiet area.”

He added: “I would say it's exceptional. I would think any stabbing is shocking.”

If you have any information about the incident which took place yesterday morning at about 9am then contact Hampshire police on 101.
