A HAMPSHIRE grandmother of five died after suffering multi-organ failure following an operation at Southampton General Hospital an inquest heard.

Retired nurse Cynthia Geddes, 80, from Ringwood underwent the operation after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.Winchester Coroner’s Court was told that despite concerns about her age by surgeon Mohammed Abu Hilal at Southampton General Hospital, Mrs Geddes asked to have the operation to remove the cancer.

After removal of the tumour, she developed a blood clot, which led to the multi-organ failure. She died on September 26, three days after the operation.

Giving evidence, pathologist Dr Vipul Foria said a post-mortem examination found Mrs Geddes also had a background heart condition.

Coroner Grahame Short recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.

Cynthia’s daughter Candace Lewis described her as a loving mother. She said: “She was always there for other people. She was an amazing human who will be missed so much.”
