HE has gone the extra mile to make sure his patients feel safe and secure over what could be very uncomfortable treatment.
Urology surgeon Matthew Hayes has been nominated for the Daily Echo Hospital Hero Award for his determination to help in whatever way he can.
Patient Victoria Millett put Mr Hayes from Southampton General Hospital forward to thank him for going above and beyond what she expected.
Victoria, of Bournemouth, said: “He is an amazing doctor to me who goes over and above of what his job entitles him to do.
“For example he has helped me with catching up with appointments not related to his area, updated me on medical results, has phoned me directly to update me on my health and he is always on time with his appointments and if for any reason it is delayed I am always told straight away.
“I have never ever had a doctor so understanding, willing to help in any way he can like Mr Hayes and I can go to him about anything. Even if it’s not something he can do himself, he still will help in any way he can. He never fails to sort a problem out for me.”

Mr Hayes said: “I feel pleasantly surprised by the nomination. It’s lovely to be nominated by somebody who I have been looking after and have known for a few years.
“We get occasional thank you letters or gifts from people as doctors but to receive a nomination is lovely and very flattering.”
Mr Hayes is among a number of NHS staff nominated for the award, which will be presented at a ceremony on March 3 at Novotel Hotel in Southampton.
