HUNDREDS of homes have been left without water this morning following a major leak.

Workers are on site at the corner of Stanton Road and King George's Avenue in Regents Park trying to fix the problem which one resident said he understood was affecting around 400 homes.

David Seagrave, 66, who lives nearby, said the water had gone off at around 9.15am and he had rung Southern Water who had confirmed a problem.

He went to the road to investigate and complained and said since then the water had come back on but not at full power.

He was told that once they had found the leak that the water would have to be switched off again.

“There was water flowing down the road,” he said.

The scene at Stanton Road

“They had a pump there and the water was being controlled by the pump, but it was gushing.

“They're having to pump it out to get to the leak.

“I wish they could have propagated the news especially as there is an awful lot of pensioners in this area.”

Alison Rawlings

Alison Rawlings, 45, a dog walker and boarder from Stanton Road said: "I turned the tap on at about 9am and there was no water. We had no leaflets through the door saying they were going to do work.

"We have bottled water so it's not a problem for us. I don't know how long they will be as it means we can't shower or anything."

Madeleine Batchelor

Madeleine Batchelor, 50, a housewife from Stanton Road said: "The water was slow when I was doing my teeth at about 10am but the taps downstairs have been working fine. At first I thought the washing machine was on."

Marcus Gage, 48, a tiler from Stanton Road, said: "The water in my house is on. It's a bit better than this morning. It was low pressure and just trickling at first. We had no warning about it. I'm a little bit gutted but at least I have water. People must have been devastated without it. You take it for granted."

Bartek Wojtas & Patrick

Bartek Wojtas, 35, a welder from Stanton Road, said: "This morning at about 8am when I woke up my mother in law said there was lots of water on our driveway.

"We looked out of the window and our car was covered in water. It was about 2cm deep. The water people were here already, sweeping the footpaths and clearing the drains.

"Sometimes the tap has been shut off because of the pipe works. They're still working on it. It could take a couple of hours."

Kath Burke, 52, an administrator from Stanton Road, said: "I only heard about it from my husband. He said the tap wasn't working and apparently the workmen were outside doing the road at 8.30/9am.

"I think we should have been informed because there was no warning. It's delayed me getting ready because I couldn't have a shower."

Southern Water said in trying to reduce the amount of water going through the burst pipe supply had been cut to around 200 homes, but this was only for around 15 minutes, though she said it may have taken more time for the supply to come back to full strength.

A spokesman said water to the nearby homes had been rerouted through a different part of the network to restore the supply, but apologised for any inconvenience to customers.
She said the leak had been fixed at midday.
