A VAN destroyed a garden wall after crashing into it on a Hampshire road.

The incident happened in Fleet End Road near Warsash and saw bricks from the wall smash into a window of a house.

The occupant of the house, who was in at the time was uninjured but was 'shaken' following the crash.

Fire-fighters from Fareham fire station attended the incident to make the scene safe.They blocked drain pipe in the road to stop the oil and fuel from the van leaking into it and say that the van was “completely” wrecked and driver had fled the scene by the time they arrived.

A spokesperson for Fareham fire station, said: “One resident was at home at the time, he heard a screech and then a bang as the driver come down the road at speed and hit the wall.”

“We are surprised that the driver is okay after the crash.”

Police also attended the incident which happened at 7.37pm last night.

The resident who was inside watching television upstairs at the time, said:"I heard braking, screeching and then a bang, and I could feel the house shake.

"The van was on top of where the pillars are and I saw the guy walking away, then I phoned the police.

"It was quite a shock at first but now we are sorting everything out."

One of the residents cars, a Renault estate has also been damaged by the impact and was dented by flying bricks.
