A major police operation was launched at around 8.40pm, with four police cars, a van and two ambulances attending the scene in International Way.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed a man was pronounced dead on the scene last night.

She said: "We were called at around 8.37pm to a tower block in International Way to an incident where a male had fallen from a great height.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and one ambulance crew but one patient was confirmed deceased at the scene."

Police officers stood guard at the scene until around 1am last night, and an investigation into the death has now been launched.

There is no police presence at the scene this morning.

Residents have reacted with shock to the man's death.

Another woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I was at work and my partner phoned me to tell me something was going on.

"There were still lots of police there when I got back before 10pm.

"It's very sad."

Daily Echo:

Another resident, Andrew Mills, said: "It's very sad. I saw that there were lots of police cars out there last night and I heard later someone had died.

"I feel for their family."

A woman who asked not to be named said: "I was at work but a friend told me on Facebook that something had happened.

"It's just such a shame."

Another resident of the block told the Daily Echo: "We heard screaming coming from outside and at first we thought someone was being attacked.

"Then my girlfriend looked out and saw the body lying there.

"We could still hear a woman screaming, she was saying "I still need you", she was hysterical.

"I felt very sorry for her.

"I was nearly crying myself, I didn't know the man myself but seeing him there, it makes your body start to shake."

Resident Leah Hansford said: "I saw lots and lots of police out of the window, they cordoned off a large area around the whole of the block.

"We found out through Facebook, it is very sad to hear about something happening like this.

"It's quite unusual too because you don't get anything like this happening."

Neighbour Jennifer Clifford said: "There were quite a few cars out there and they cordoned off all around the block.

"There were about five police cars, a wagon and an ambulance.

"I'm quite grateful my children were in bed and didn't witness any of it. It's sad."
