IT is the sport of the wizard world of Harry Potter.

But instead of a team of witches and wizards using potions, broomsticks and spells the sport of Quidditch is played in real life by students and Harry Potter fans from across the country.

The best team in the country is none other than Southampton Community Quidditch Club.

The club tasted glory when they competed against 24 teams from across the country in the British Quidditch Cup held in Nottingham.

Southampton blitzed past their opposition to the final where they paired off against Radcliffe Chimeras.

They managed to overcome a slow start and beat the Chimeras 120-90.

Team captain and President Simon Bidwell believes the club’s success is down to strong team spirit.

Simon, said: “The first thing I said to our players when we won is ‘I told you so’, because I knew if we played our best we would win.”

Daily Echo:

“It hasn’t really sunk in to be honest because we have been training for this for such a long time. Everyone ran on to the pitch celebrating – it was pretty emotional.”

“On the way home on the coach I said to the team ‘It is not the end it is just the beginning’ because we have something really special in our club and if we keep training hard we can keep winning titles.”

Daily Echo:

The club will now compete at the European championships on April 18 and 19.

Simon said: “The teams from France are really good but I’m confident if we keep playing well we will be the best Quidditch team in Europe.”
