TONIGHT the Global Rock Challenge starts at Southampton Guildhall where more than 3,000 youngsters will compete to wow audiences with their dazzling performances.

A multitude of performers will be trying to knock the socks off audiences this week with their eight-minute musical message.

Months of preparation have gone into the show to perfect their dance routines, costume design and technical stage work as each group vie to win a place in the southern final.

The Rock Challenge is an international performing arts competition for schools and colleges that drives home the message against drugs, smoking and alcohol.

This year's musical message is "Be Your Best - Be Yourself" as the Rock Challenge reaches out to bring youngsters together around the world for a natural high.

Now in its 12th year the competition originated in Australia and was introduced to the UK by Hampshire police in 1996.

Due to huge demand this year there will be a spectacular six-night heat as the Southampton leg of the national competition kicks off at the Guildhall.

Winners from each night will go through to the Southern Open Final at Portsmouth Guildhall on May 31 and June 1.

A souvenir edition of the Daily Echo's Global Rock Challenge issue will be on sale all week at the Guildhall.
