WINCHESTER civic chiefs have agreed to extend the alcohol exclusion zone introduced to clampdown on drunken nuisance.

The zone was launched in July 2005 to deal with drunks who congregated in city centre parks. It made it an offence to drink in public if told to stop by a policeman.

While the problem in central areas has eased, drinkers have moved on to River Park, near the leisure centre, and into Hyde.

Now the city council is proposing to extend the zone across the whole city including Badger Farm, Olivers Battery and Harestock.

The licensing committee agreed in principle to the extension.

A public consultation exercise will be held before the new boundaries are confirmed. The results of the consultation will be heard at a special meeting on June 7.
