WINCHESTER'S first private GP practice will soon open in the city centre.

The Walcote Practice will offer same day appointments within and outside standard working hours with consultations priced from £65.

It comes after 66 health workers were made redundant at the Friarsgate offices earlier this year to make way for the now on hold £150 million Silver Hill scheme.

Former doctor in the Australian Royal Flying Doctor Service, Nicholas Hillier, will lead the surgery in Southgate Street which opens on June 1.

He said doctors will be available within 48 hours, or on the same day where possible, to cater to those with busy lives.

"If needed, The Walcote Practice can provide quick access to diagnostic tests, scans and health screening followed by rapid referrals," he said.

"It’s all designed around excellent client healthcare and client convenience."

He will be joined by retired senior partner at Bishop's Waltham Surgery, Stephen Hillier.
