A GLAMOROUS Bollywood evening helped raise more than £5,000 for victims of one of the worst earthquakes to shake Asia.

More than 250 people filled the Vedic Society Hindu Temple in Radcliffe Road, Northam, for the evening of singing, dancing and dinner.

People donated food and facilities and volunteered their time in support of the event which was organised by the Vedic Society with support from Southampton Council of Faiths to help rebuild Nepal.

The evening featured performances from Bollywood singers including Jayant and Gunjan Shukla, Puja Angra and Karan Rana from Southampton.

TheVedic Society's chair of trustees Avinash Patel said: "Disasters don't look at a person's faith. Disasters happen to any human. The money we're collecting is not for a particular faith - it's for all humans who are effected by the earthquake.

"Our long term goal is to affiliate with other non-government organisations who would fund-match our donation and create a bigger project to help build schools or hospitals or provide access to water facilities.

"Long term projects are vital to the future of people who have had their infrastructures destroyed.

"At short notice we have created this event with the help of volunteers and artists who have put on an excellent Bollywood fundraising event. We thank everybody who supported it by coming."

They are the latest in a string of Hampshire organisations who have done their bit since the disaster to help survivors.

People across the county were shocked by the devastation left behind by the 7.8 magnitude quake on April 25 which was followed by a 7.4 magnitude quake on May 12 wrecking homes, cutting off water and power supplies and leaving thousands stranded.

Since then Hampshire school children, war veterans, clubs and businesses have held fundraisers and donated cash in support of the following aid effort.
