THEY are preparing to bare all for their cause.

Scores of cyclists will strip off tonight for Southampton’s annual naked bike ride.

World Naked Bike Ride country takes place every year to raise awareness of green travel and protest the dangers that cyclists face such as poor road planning, bad driving and use of fossil fuels.

And the weather is set to be scorching, giving some riders the opportunity to brush up on their sun-tans.

Now in its ninth year, motorists and residents may be used to the sight of nude or scantily clad cyclists swarming through the city en masse but it is sure to come as quite a shock to some.

Last year’s event proved very popular with the city’s Asian community with hundreds of people turning out to watch the start of the ride near Southampton Common.

While some are happy in their birthday suits, expect to see several creative ways riders will use to cover their modesty, from masks and hats to body paint and strategically place cycling accessories.

The six-mile course begins at the junction of Highfield Road and Omdurman Road at 6.30pm and the route will take cyclists through Portswood and some of the city centre, so is sure to draw attention from amused and bemused spectators alike.

The event is usually well attended with 50 cyclists taking part last year while previous rides have attracted more than 100 participants.

A spokesman for the organisers said all were welcome to take part in the event, which is about having fun as well as promoting a serious message.

The spokesman said: “Join us from 6pm and let’s show Southampton that cyclists need to be seen, fossil fuels need to be saved and the human body isn’t offensive.

"Don’t forget to invite your friends, family, colleagues and even random people on the street.

“It’s fun, it’s free and the sun will be shining so don’t forget the sun cream.”

Rollerblades, skates and other non-petrol powered wheeled transport is also permitted.

Police have been notified of the event and will have patrols around the area to ensure safety.

Riders have been instructed by police to follow the rules of the road, including stopping at all red lights and giving way as required at junctions.

The first World Naked Bike Ride of the year also started in Hampshire when it took place in Portsmouth on May 23.

To participate, meet at Highfield Road at 6pm for a briefing.
