DETECTIVES are tonight quizzing a man who has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Officers launched an investigation after they were called to the Hunnyhill area of Newport, on the Isle of Wight, in the early hours on Sunday morning.

There they found a woman, ages in her early 20’s, who alleged she was sexually assaulted by a man.

The scene, an area of the town between Heytesbury Road and Grange Drive, was sealed off for forensic examination.

Police have tonight confirmed that initial enquiries suggest this is an isolated incident with no wider risk to the community at this time.

Detectives are following several leads with specialist officers working closely with the victim to support her welfare.

Neighbourhood officers and PCSOs are carrying out extra patrols in the local community to provide reassurance.

The suspect, who was arrested on the island this afternoon, remains in police custody this evening for further questioning.

Anyone with information can contact the Isle of Wight Investigation Team on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
