HOW blooming marvellous!

Hampshire folk were treated to a guest appearance from a Downton Abbey star at the launch evening of a gigantic flower festival.

Hugh Bonneville, known for playing the honourable Robert Crawley in the period drama, managed to sneak away from filming at Highclere Castle.

He brought his charm to Winchester Cathedral as he declared Cascades officially open.

"I love this city and it's a great opportunity to see what the fantastic flower arrangers of Winchester have come up with," Hugh told the Echo.

"I get the feeling that it is quite surprising and a modern flower show, which is quite an exciting idea. I know I will be intoxicated by the smells as well as the colours."

As well as walks around the River Itchen, the actor said he finds the city peaceful and enjoys the Christmas market - perhaps we'll see you there Hugh over a mug of mulled wine?
