A SOUTHAMPTON man, who produced a knife in front of a woman walking her dog in a West End Park, was further remanded in custody with a warning he will go to jail.

Daniel Sharpe, 21, had earlier attacked his girl friend, the city's crown court heard.

Sharpe admitted assaulting Alice Southern and stealing her iPhone. He further admitted affray in causing and threatening violence towards Susan Whelan to make a person of reasonable firmness at the scene to fear for his or her personal safety.

Prosecutor Rob Welling said: “He behaved very irrationally towards Mrs Whelan, his girlfriend and other people, We cannot say what his motive was but he produced the knife.”

Audrey Archer, defending, said: “It certainly was bizarre behaviour. He had recently discovered his girlfriend was expecting his child and he had recently lost his mother. A pre-sentence report will help to try and explain what was in his mind at the time, but he wants to inform the court he didn’t set out to cause distress that day and he is very sorry for that. He has written a letter to Mrs Whelan in the hope it will be passed on.”

Sharpe, of The Foxgloves, Hedge End, who has a previous conviction for robbery, was further remanded in custody for will is to be sentenced on July 27., but Judge Peter Henry told him: “Because of your antecedents and the nature of this case, a lengthy custodial sentence in inevitable.”
