SOUTHAMPTON schoolchildren have chosen the team names for a major world record attempt set to hit the city later this summer.

Volunteer John Sennett is on a mission to organise the world’s biggest rounders exhibition match ever.

Now, with the help of Springhill Catholic Primary School he has the names for the two rounders teams.

Super Strikers and The Battling Ballers were the team names chosen by students as the names that could hopefully win Southampton the title for the Guinness World Record.

John, 23 said: “We really want to get as many kids involved as possible because it’s a really fun event that may encourage them to be more active.

“We set up a competition at Springhill to find the names for the two teams and it worked really well – our winners were Leanne and Mareena.”

John also asked pupils to sign up to take part in the match and had more than 500 entrants.

He added: “We are trying to get as many people as possible to join in and play a rounders match. Hopefully all the Springfield pupils will come but we need at least 100 people to break the record.”

The rounders match will be held in partnership with Active Nation at Southampton Outdoor Sports Centre in Basset on Sunday, August 30.

As well as the match there will be entertainment on the day from 2pm till 6pm including music, a tombola and games.

John is still looking for volunteers to help organise people on the day, he said: “I just think this is such a brilliant chance for communities to come together and do something really fun.

"It would be amazing to say you were there with hundreds of other people that day to break a world record – it’s never been done before so really it’s up to us now to really make this happen.
