A MARRIED couple needed medical treatment when an electric bicycle caught fire in their Hampshire home in the early hours of today.

The pair awoke to find the bike burning in the front room of their terraced house in Kealy Road, Gosport, at 12.15am.

The man, believed to be in his early 30s tried to tackle the flames by throwing water over the bike which was being charged at an electrical point at the time.

Crews from Gosport fire station arrived to find the flames already out.

They gave oxygen to the man and his wife, believed to be in her late 20s, who were suffering from smoke inhalation.

An ambulance was called but the couple did not need hospital treatment.

The bike was completely destroyed and the fire caused 20 per cent damage to the floor and severe smoke damage to the room.

Watch manager Steve Bint reminded people not to fight electrical fires with water and added: “People shouldn’t attempt to put it out. If it is safe to do so people should close the door get out and call us.”
