I TAKE issue with the statement in the article about James Nicolson that his was the only Victoria Cross (VC) to be awarded to a member of the RAF during the whole of the Second World War (page 38, Daily Echo, Saturday, August 22).
In his book For Valour: The Air VCs Chaz Bowyer lists 32 recipients of the Victoria Cross during the war, two of whom were in the Royal Navy, so there were 30 Royal Air Force personnel who received the award.
However James Nicolson was the only fighter pilot.
