A WOMAN has been disqualified from driving after admitting being drunk at the wheel when she crashed into another car.

Susan Slater was involved in a collision on Tollbar Way in Hedge End on August 17.

Southampton Magistrates' Court was told how police who attended were told by members of the public that they had seen Slater's Hyundai driving all over the road at the time and then she had hit another vehicle.

The 51-year-old, of Osterley Close, Botley, provided a sample with a reading of 59 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - the limit is 35 microgrammes.

Slater told police that she had driven after having a glass of sherry at home and she had felt like going out because she had not been long out of hospital for a detox, the court heard.

She said she was having trouble with the gears of the car, approached the roundabout and when traffic stopped had gone into the car in front, she said.

The court heard she had no previous convictions.

Slater, who represented herself, pleaded guilty to drink diving and said she had not felt drunk when she got in the car, but added: "I regret it happened, I'm sorry and I'm glad I didn't hurt anybody."

She said she suffered from depression, had got to a low ebb and started drinking, but had not had alcohol since the incident and had sought help.

Magistrates disqualified Slater from driving for 16 months, reduced by four months if she takes a drivers rehabilitation course, and ordered her to pay fines and costs of £365.
