A MEMORIAL service has been held in Romsey to mark the death of Lord Mountbatten in 1979, who was assassinated by the IRA whilst on a fishing trip to the Irish Republic.

The Earl Mountbatten Memorial branch of the Royal British Legion organised the service at Romsey Abbey and Romsey’s Vicar, the Rev Canon Tim Sledge conducted it. He was assisted by retired Royal Air Force and Hampshire’s Royal British Legion padre, the Rev Canon Ray Hubble and assistant curate the Rev David Potterton.

The Union Flag and 25 standards representing organisations, including Hampshire County Legion branch, the Regimental Association Branch and Cadet units, were carried by bearers before the service during a parade from the town hall to Romsey Abbey.

The procession was lead by Peter Cox carrying the Earl Mountbatten Memorial branch standardChairman of the Earl Mountbatten branch and a wreath was laid at Lord Mountbatten's tomb.
