Budget airline Flybe is pulling out of Bournemouth Airport and making Southampton its only base in the area.

The airline currently flies from Bournemouth to Jersey, Glasgow, Dublin, Paris and Amsterdam but is pulling out just six months after restarting flights from the airport.

In a statement Flybe said: “Following an exhaustive review of its route network prior to finalising the 2016 summer programme, Flybe has determined it will no longer have a requirement to base aircraft in Bournemouth with effect from March 27 2016.

“Flybe remains fully committed to delivering unrivalled regional connectivity throughout the UK and can however reassure its South Coast passengers that it will continue to develop and operate an extensive choice of attractive routes for business and leisure travel from its long established base at Southampton.”

Chief commercial officer Paul Simmons added: “We have decided to consolidate the business network that was in place at Bournemouth, into our Southampton base.

“This will enable more frequency and more choice to our customers through consolidating our South Coast operation into one airport.

“As a result, we regret that we are unable to continue to operate the leisure routes we flew from Bournemouth in next year’s schedule.”

Flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has also announced details of its 2016 summer schedule from Southampton.

A total of 21 routes will offer passengers a choice of up to 289 flights a week to an extensive range of destinations.

The programme includes an extension through to summer of the airline’s new daily Dusseldorf service and extra flights to and from Dublin and Manchester.

Flybe has also announced the return of seasonal flights to regional France including Avignon, Bordeaux, BREST La Rochelle, Perpignan, and twice weekly flights to Verona in Italy.
