“WE ARE the lucky ones - we are getting him back”.

Those are the words of a Hampshire family of a British rock fan shot twice as he crawled through bodies to escape the jihadists storming the Bataclan.

Mark Backwell from London was hit in the left shoulder as he crawled on his hands and knees to avoid the rain of bullets fired by the gunmen.

The 50-year-old hospital worker manage to make it to an exit before escaping down the street with blood pouring from his wounds.

Now he is preparing to return to this country after being discharged from the Georges Pompidou hospital in the French capital on Monday.

He was among friends going to the gig with Southampton couple Maria and Patrick Moore who are regulars at the band’s concerts.

Mark’s older sister Wendy, who lives near Fareham, said she first heard when her brother text to tell her he had been caught in the chaos.

She said: “He’s my little brother and if he’s hurt everybody’s hurt. He was shot twice and lost a lot of blood. He’s had surgery and been released from hospital. But we are the lucky ones – we are getting him back. It’s just awful how many other people aren’t getting their loved ones back.”

She thanked the hospital for its “fantastic” care and the Moore’s for keeping him company added: “Knowing he had those people out there caring for him is was a huge help. They’ve stood up to the mark and shown human nature at its best.”
