A BURST water main caused traffic chaos on a busy road.

Tailbacks of up to an hour were reported in Chandler’s Ford after the incident on School Lane, which happened at about 8am yesterday.

Engineers spent several hours trying to correct the problem, with work continuing into the evening.

The road was closed for much of the day but has reopened this morning.

Drivers are advised to check their route before travelling.

Residents who live near to a normally busy rat run woke up to a river view after a burst water main flooded a Hampshire road.

School Lane in Chandler's Ford was closed to traffic causing chaos on the local road network.

One resident who asked not to be named said she woke up at 5am to emergency repair vehicles outside her front door.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: "It is normally really busy with traffic so I expect it has caused quite a problem.

"It normally floods down there so expect there is quite a bit of standing water. We have had cars turning around d on our drive quite a bit."

Some vehicles did try and pass the flooded road by using the kerb.

A team of engineers were on site this morning as water continued to gush from the broken water main.

Dog walker Lucy Cotton said: "It is a lot of water that is still coming out. Hopefully they'll fix it soon."

Southern Water said the company is working to fix the burst pipe as a matter of urgency but could not say when the problem will be rectified.

A spokesman said: "The water supply is not affected and no properties are without water - however we have ordered a water tanker to ensure the Hampshire Corporate business park remains in supplies while we carry out this vital repair.

"We understand this has impacted on drivers and would like to apologise to anyone affected. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible and would like to thank people for their patience."
