POLICE are investigating after a teenager was caught trying to break into a house by climbing through a window.

The unidentified teenager was seen trying to enter the building on Wilton Avenue, Southampton, between 11.30am and 11.45am on Wednesday, February 3.

He was confronted by a resident and then fled the scene without taking anything.

Following the incident police are urging residents to keep ground floor windows closed and secure and keep doors locked.

The teenager is described as being white and of a skinny build and had short brown, gelled and spiked hair.

He was about 16 and was wearing a dark-coloured t-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Police staff investigator Wayne Harris from the Western Investigations Team said: “We are appealing for witnesses who were in the Wilton Avenue area around this time.

"Did you see a man matching this description?

“We would also like to appeal directly to anyone who may have private CCTV in the Wilton Avenue or surrounding area that may be able to assist?
