COASTGUARDS launched a rescue operation in choppy waters in Hampshire today after reports of a missing child.

However after a major search of the area in Gosport it emerged that it had in fact been a malicious hoax call.

The Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service (GAFIRS) was launched at Workshouse Lake at about 10.40am yesterday.

Police, the UK Coastguard rescue helicopter and mobile units from Hill Head were all involved in the search along the shore line behind Gosport Rugby Club.

However after an extensive search of the Haslar Creek area it then emerged the call-out had been made by hoaxers with a "malicious intent".

GAFIRS senior coxswain Chris Rudd said: "We launched into rough seas and were on scene quickly – and with the high tide we even had to lower our A-frame, which mounts our aerials, so we could squeeze under Haslar Bridge.

"After an extensive search of the area we were stood down by UK Coastguard when they confirmed the call out was a malicious hoax.

"Hoaxes like this tie up valuable resources and waste a great deal of time and money. However, I’m very glad it wasn’t a real child in the water."

Two youths are currently helping police with their enquiries about the incident.
