SNOW has fallen on Hampshire for the first time this year.

Many jacket-less shoppers dashed for cover to protect themselves from the ‘blizzard’, whilst students danced around, pretending it was Christmas Day.

As reported earlier this week, temperatures in Southampton, Winchester and the New Forest are set to plummet as it approaches the weekend.

A band of rain and sleet will gradually move over the south today with a maximum temperature of 7 degrees Celsius.

A brisk northerly wind will develop this evening with outbreaks of rain or sleet and frost will develop overnight as temperatures hit -1 degrees Celsius.

Tomorrow will be cloudier with scattered showers affecting the south with a brisk northeasterly breeze and maximum temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius again.

Social media user Lucy Garrard-Abrahams (@mudandhighheels) sent in the above video of snow falling in Winchester.

Further south in Hampshire, snow and hail were seen in Whiteley at Solent Business Park at about 1pm.

And residents reported seeing snow in Totton, Dibden Purlieu and Lyndhurst.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning of snow from 3pm today until 9am on Saturday.

The forecaster has predicted that a mix of rain, sleet and snow will sweep across the region and black ice could form.

A statement said: “Please be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and for some travel disruption during the Friday evening rush hour and overnight into Saturday morning.

“This warning will likely be updated in the coming days as confidence increases on detail.”
