HE was always set to have the world at his feet.

But Southampton dancer Kai Widdrington decided to tread the boards as a toe-tapper rather than follow his father into football.

He made a name for himself when he appeared in the finals of TV talent contest Britain's Got Talent in 2012 and now former Barton Peveril College student Kai is touring with Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole in his latest show A Night To Remember.

Family and friends will gather at Mayflower Theatre on Sunday to see 20-year-old Kai in action in the show, which is loaded with ballroom magic and Latin excitement.

"You should expect the unexpected with this show," says Kai. "There will be Ballroom and Latin and lots of little twists here and there. We have contemporary waltzes and it's very different in places.

"I'm not in bad company. Brendan is on Saturday night TV every week and this is a great platform for me. He is an amazing dancer and choreographer and I'm loving being a part of his show.

"It's always special coming home and I'm really looking forward to Sunday. It will be a home crowd with friends coming to watch. It's the theatre I grew up watching shows in, so it makes it quite sentimental for me really.

"Plus it's towards the end of the tour and on Easter Sunday! We've been working pretty hard, so I'm looking forward to having two days off in Southampton!"

The son of Saints no nonsense former midfielder Tommy, Kai was initially hoping to follow in his father's footsteps.

"I always wanted to become a professional football player, but I found dance by chance. Mum sent me along to a dance school (Dizzyfeet Dancing in Shirley). I was really hyperactive as a child and I used to drive her crazy. I hated it at first, but it really calmed me down and I soon found I really liked it. I particularly liked the competitive side of it and the music.

"My brother (16-year-old Theo) is the footballer in the family!"

Mum Candice and ten-year-old sister Tia, from Eastleigh, will be among the audience this weekend for the nearly sold out show.

Kai will follow the Brendan Cole tour with a stint in South Africa with dance company Burn The Floor and three months performing on a cruise ship.

Very limited tickets for the show on Sunday remain.
