A YOUNG boy who has been defying the doctors while raising money for charity has been nominated for a top award.

Schoolboy Felix Barrow has been put forward for a St George’s Day Community award as the countdown to the bid day continues.

Felix was left fighting for his life after he was hit by a car on his way to Swanmore College in October last year.

The 11-year-old, who was a keen athlete, was told he may never walk again but the youngster has defied the odds and made remarkable steps in his recovery.

His parents also set up the group Fit for Felix, which raises money for his treatment as well as the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIWAA) and the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton General Hospital, both of which helped Felix.

So far they have raised almost £30,000.

Fit for Felix was also part of the Daily Echo’s Say Yes George campaign which successfully secured a new A&E unit in Southampton General Hospital.

Now Felix and Fit for Felix have been nominated for a Daily Echo and Southampton St George’s Day Festival Community Award, in the category of Young Person or People who have Improved Life and Wellbeing in the Southampton City Region.

Felix’s mum, Vanessa, 42, from Swanmore, said: “It is great to be nominated and it feels slightly surreal. But it is about raising awareness for HIWAA and PICU and Felix and getting him well.

“Felix is doing extremely well and he is able to get up and get himself dressed now.

“The fundraising is going really well, people are being really generous, Felix is very fit and so we want to get people out and doing activities.”
