TWO people were assaulted on a train over a ticket dispute.

The double assault took place after a man was challenged by a ticket inspector for travelling with a child's ticket on a train between Weymouth and London.

The ticket inspector confronted the man just after 10am on Thursday, March 10, at which point he became aggressive and attacked the inspector.

Another member of the public tried to intervene and was himself punched by the man, according to the police.

After assaulting the pair, the man left the train at Southampton Airport Parkway.

PC Jim Hordle from the British Transport Police said: “Fortunately neither man sustained serious injuries, but this was still an unwarranted act of aggression.

“Members of rail staff have a right to expect to be able to carry out their work without fear of violence.

“Similarly the passenger who was assaulted did the right thing trying to defuse the situation.

Now the police have released this image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident and are asking the public to contact them with any information.

PC Hordle said: “I want to speak to the man in the image about this incident as I believe he has information about what took place.”

Anyone with any information has been asked to contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 184 of 28/4/16.
