TWO drivers caused school run mayhem by refusing to move for an hour as they clashed at a pinch point in Hampshire.

The motorists have been branded “idiotic” after getting in each others’ way in St James’ Lane, Winchester.

“Fuming” mum Janice Porter said her eight-year-old son was left crying in the rain as her children waited to be picked up from Kings’ School after the stand-off left traffic tailing back to a major city road. Ms Porter, from Shawford, said: “I was waiting there for almost an hour – my kids were waiting in the pouring rain for me.”

The clash occurred on Tuesday afternoon between a Vauxhall Astra and a Ford Focus as they headed over a single-lane railway bridge.

Another motorist was pictured getting out of his car to speak to the driver of the Vauxhall.

Ms Porter joked that it was “temp- ting” to go and hit both drivers.

“They didn’t do a lot, they just stared at each other,” she added.

Winchester residents expressed their anger at the stubborn drivers after Ms Porter shared her experience on Facebook.

Steve George said: “Bunch of useless idiotic drivers. Says a lot for the standard of driving around this place. So many people that don’t have a clue how our roads are meant to work.”

Local councillor Liz Hutchison, said: “That road needs attention because it is not only a narrow bridge used by vehicles but it is constantly used by students and there is no proper crossing there.

“I have been developing a walking strategy and we constantly hear about that stretch of St James’ Lane, that whole area should be 20mph and there should be a raised table.

“It seems as though both motorists were behaving foolishly.”

Hugh Bladon, treasurer one of the founding members of the Alliance of British Drivers and their treasurer, said: “These things seem to come from the belligerent way that people have started to live their lives, there is an awful lot of aggression on the roads now that we did not see 20 or 30-years-ago."

“The roads have become more and more congested around the country and we are not building enough roads to cope with the traffic.

“This make people more frustrated and fed up, making the population less tolerant and less courteous.”
