But once the police found the device they established it was not an explosive, saying it clearly posed no "viable danger" to the public.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said: "Police can confirm they were called to St Mary's Stadium, Southampton just before 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 17 following a report of a suspicious device on the premises.
"The allegation was made to security staff by a member of the public.
"Police officers and security staff quickly established there was no threat to anyone in the stadium and control of the incident was passed back to security staff.
"No evacuation was necessary.
"Police are looking further into the details of this incident to establish whether any criminal investigation will follow."
The incident could have ruined the Kelvin Davis Testimonial Match, which was due to kick off at St Mary's at 7.30pm, but was delayed by 15 minutes.
The incident comes just days after Old Trafford was evacuated ahead of the Manchester United' clash with Bournemouth due to a training bomb device being left in the toilets.
Chris Reid, managing director of Security Search Management & Solutions, which carried out a terror training drill at Old Trafford earlier in the week, said he took full responsibility for the blunder, which is reported to cost the host club millions in lost revenue.
The Premier League match was abandoned and the stands cleared after the mistake sparked a major security alert in Manchester.
