HUNDREDS gathered for a spectacular procession at a popular Hampshire carnival.

A thundery downpour that threatened to drench people taking part in Netley Marsh Carnival ended shortly before the parade moved off from the Gamekeeper pub in Woodlands Road.

Black clouds were replaced by blue skies and warm sunshine as the procession started its journey through the parish.

With the threat of rain receding a large number of villagers turned out to watch their colourful procession of floats make their way to a summer fete at St Matthew's Church Hall.

This year's carnival queen was Misty-Rayne Lloyd, 11, who was joined by her two princesses, Maye Farrer, nine, and six-year-old Jessica Philps.

Uniformed youth groups were among the organisations that took part in the event.

Members of the 6th New Forest North Chestnut Beavers dressed up as characters from The Lego Movie, a 2014 computer-animated adventure film that won several awards.

Music was provided by the Stanley's Own Scout and Guide Band, based in nearby Copythorne.

The 1st Netley Marsh Brownies dressed as rag dolls, complete with pinnies, stripy tights and wigs made from red wool, while the Netley Marsh Rainbows transformed themselves into giant puppets for the occasion. Members of the 2nd Netley Marsh Brownies were each dressed as a Jack in the Box.

A collection of vintage vehicles in the procession included a steam roller and a 1928 dustcart that was used by Stepney council.
