A Hampshire schoolgirl has given away her long locks of hair to a cancer charity.

Eight year old, Amy Ovenden, from Totton has given the gift of her hair to the charity The Little Princess Trust.

The Trust provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Amy’s hair will be used to make a wig for a child battling cancer.

Amy a pupil at Abbotswood School had her hair cut by Stuart Brockway of Lord's Hair in Oxford Street, Southampton, who generously gave his time for free.

As well as donating her hair to The Little Princess Trust, Amy has been fundraising and to date has raised over £420 for them. Her friends and family are very proud of her achievement.

Amy had a family friend of her age that was a victim to cancer and her grandmother is a cancer survivor.

It was because of these experiences that Amy wanted to help a cancer charity and her mother Catherine, a photographer, suggested the Trust as she had donated her own hair in the past.

Catherine said: “I suggested to Amy that it was something she might like to consider as we know a family who lost their Daughter to cancer. She was the same age as Amy. “ “Amy decided that it was something she wanted to do, to help another child who was poorly. I fully supported her decision and think she's a bit of a star."

Her mother added: “We fundraise for Cancer Research UK via Race for Life and I'm racing again in July.”

Amy said: "I've raised over £400 now and my hair will be a wig for another little girl or boy. It's good to help people who need help."
