THEY will be jubilantly jumping for joy – and the chance to smash a world record.

Hundreds of youngsters – including scores in Southampton – will be reaching for the stars as part of a mammoth nationwide sporting challenge.

Schoolchildren in the city will leap into action at the £1.5 million Oxygen Freejumping trampoline park in Antelope Retail Park, Thornhill, today for the landmark contest.

They will join more than 400 pupils across the country launching a nationwide Guinness World Records attempt for the most people simultaneously bouncing on trampolines.

More than 100 youngsters will be at the Southampton centre in Bursledon Road –- where they will be jumping at the same time as peers in Oxygen’s four other trampoline parks in Wigan, Derby, Manchester and London and will bounce continuously for five minutes.

The parks are made up of interconnected trampolines that stretch from the floor to the ceiling, that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age, size, fitness level or experience.

The Southampton park was launched in December last year by free running founder Sébastien Foucan –- who played a memorable role in James Bond’s Casino RoyaleCasino Royale during an iconic sky-high chase on huge cranes with Daniel Craig The 25,000sq ft park features 100 trampolines, an obstacle course, a 3,500ft mezzanine, two dodgeball courts, an airbag and walls that jumpers can walk up.

It also has an indoor free running facility –- the first of its kind in the world to feature a series of soft play obstacles for people to learn Foucan’s athletic and acrobatic discipline.

Sebastian founded free running in the 1980s from the French military obstacle course training regime parcours du combattant and is one of the pioneering developers of Parkour.

Oxygen chief executive David Stalker said: “Our Guinness World Records attempt is the perfect way to show people how much fun they can have whilst jumping and we can’t wait to see the children of Southampton schools be a part of such a landmark event.”

The centre also offers Freejumping fun for all ages, Little O’s sessions for under 5s and children’s parties.
