SHE’S been turning the world on its head every day for a year.

Justine Allingham, 24, from Portchester has completed a year-long challenge involving 366 handstands for The Fire Fighters Charity.

She began the challenge in August 2015 and has just done her 366th handstand, with the extra handstand to include the leap year.

Justine completed the challenge with a handstand at Fareham Fire Station joined by some of its firefighters.

Justine got the idea back in August 2015 when she was at a charity event and decided that if she could do a handstand on a bouncy castle she do a handstand every day for a year.

She managed the bouncy castle so her handstand challenge began.

She chose The Fire Fighters Charity because her step-father is a firefighter.

She said: “I understand the work they do, what they put up with.

"It is dangerous – there were those lost at Shirley Towers for example.

“They don’t get enough recognition I feel.”

Justine goes to Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre and competes in competitions, although she describes herself as a novice.

She studied the aikido martial art for seven years having got to second Kyu – two below black belt.

Justine had to take a break for illness. She said: “It was almost every single day.

"I had to take 10 days break as I had labynithitis which made me wobbly.

"But I made sure I did all the 366 days afterwards.”

For the challenge, Justine visited all sorts of places all over the country including Winchester Cathedral, Trafalgar Square, Birmingham NEC during Crufts, Portchester Castle, Waterloo Station, Fareham High Street, Boomtown Fair Festival, several fire stations and the Hampshire Fire and Rescue HQ at Eastleigh.

Justine says that she would like to do another charity challenge in the future. “It has been suggested I do cartwheels for a year. I may do that although it may be a bit long, but I’m open to suggestions.”

She says of her step-dad: “He thought it was weird but whatever charity he would have been proud of me.

"Moments before I did the last one at the fire station with the firemen he tried to have a go and fell down.

"He said he didn’t realise it was so hard.”

She added her family “have all been very supportive”.

“They thought it was fantastic and were proud of my commitment to it.”

Justine is a licensing officer for Winchester council and said of her workmates: “They have all been really supportive.

“They thought I was bonkers but that it was a unique way to raise money as well.”
