A CANCER survivor will mark his 50th birthday by taking on an epic challenge to give hope to young people diagnosed with the disease.

Alex Gray will cycle 260 miles from Southampton to Leeds in aid of the charity Trekstock, who have this year launched support services for young adults with cancer in their 20s and 30s in both cities.

Alex, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in his 20s, said: “When I was diagnosed, I was away from family but surrounded by friends.

“However at that time there was no support network that I could discuss my thoughts and concerns with – people who had a better understanding of what it means to live with cancer.

“When I had a chance encounter with the great team from Trekstock, I admit to thinking I wish they were around when I was dealing with cancer.

"It was then that I decided to try and raise some money for them to continue their great work supporting young adults with cancer so they do not have to face cancer alone.”

Alex, who works for Santander, will be joined by friend Dom Penton on the challenge over two days.

They will leave Southampton at 7am tomorrow and arrive in Leeds on Sunday evening.

Sophie Epstone, Trekstock founder, said: “We’re thrilled that Alex has decided to support Trekstock and take on such an inspiring challenge to support those who are experiencing what he went through at that age.

"We have just launched our Cuppa & Connect services in both Southampton and Leeds, which tackle the social isolation that can follow a cancer diagnosis, giving our network of young adults a chance to connect with others who understand what it’s like to experience cancer and we’re delighted that Alex and Dom will be part of helping us fund this growth.”
