POLICE are hunting youths who illegally set off a string of fireworks in Hampshire parks and a school within hours of each other.

Officers say they have received three reports of youths setting off fireworks in public places in Romsey.

Now they are urging anyone who witnessed the incidents to contact them immediately.

It comes as they warn people of the dangers and the terrible consequences of misusing fireworks as they gear up for one of the busiest times of the year during Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.

Groups of youths allegedly set off fireworks at Cupernham Infants School, Romsey Memorial Park and Abbotswood nature reserve on Sunday, October 16.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “Misusing fireworks in areas such as parks is extremely dangerous, not just for the youths but also to the public.

“Patrols will be in place as well as contact to the local schools asking for their support on educating pupils on firework safety.

“Please report any further incidences that you see.

“If you are able to, please make a note of descriptions, however please do not put yourself in danger to do so.”

Meanwhile animal campaigners are offering pet owners advice to keep their pets safe during the firework season.

The Kennel Club warns that Hallowe’en costumes and loud bangs and flashes from fireworks can be very frightening and traumatic for dogs and cats.

The organisation is urging owners to plan ahead to keep pets safe and avoid them running away or behaving aggressively out of fear.

Anyone who sees people misusing fireworks should contact police on 101.
