Community activists fighting to save a Hampshire ferry turned out in force today to make their voices heard.

More than 100 commuters and residents gathered at Hythe Pier for a mass rally in support of the town's iconic ferry - spurred on by town crier Mac McLaren.

As previously reported the Hythe Ferry is "unlikely" to continue running due to user decline and the maintenance cost of the historic pier and train.

But supporters have banded together to form a committee, working group and charitable trust and have so far received more than 6,500 signatures for a protest petition.

Mr McLaren and his wife Dawn arrived in their full regalia and a placard emblazoned with the slogan "Save Hythe Ferry" and a picture of an life ring.

He enthusiastically rung his bell as residents cheered and clapped.

Mr McClaren said: "The ferry is an important part of our heritage and a vital part of our local transport. We need to help save it and boost the take up."

It was also a chance for residents - many who use the service to get to work, or for trips to Southampton city centre, or Saints games - to sign the petition and to learn about the history of the transport link.

Peter King, of the Hythe Pier Train and Ferry Action Group, said: "Today was an opportunity for people to show their support. It is a historic pier and the ferry is a crucial transport link both now and in the future. It is under threat and we want to do something to secure its future."
