GANGLY teenage plonker' Rodney Trotter was brought to life by Nicholas Lyndhurst in classic British comedy Only Fools and Horses.

He entertained the nation as Del Boy's hapless sidekick for the show's 16-year run (plus a few extra Christmas specials) helping to make him one of British comedy's most recognised faces.

But Only Fools and Horses wasn't the Hampshire-born actor's only success story. From 1978 to 1999 no year passed without his appearing in a television sitcom. First as Ronnie Barker's awkward young son in Going Straight, a follow-up to prison comedy Porridge, then as Wendy Craig's son in BBC comedy Butterflies before winning our hearts as Rodney.

By 1986 Lyndhurst was no longer just a sidekick, having landed himself a lead role in romantic comedy The Two of Us which ran for four years.

The 90s saw Lyndhurst playing a time travelling tv repairman in the BBC series Goodnight Sweetheart.

These days his television appearances are less common but he made a welcome return to our screens this year, starring in new BBC sitcom After You've Gone.
