THEY wowed the audience and judges at a charity talent show - now a Hampshire boyband will perform alongside big name stars from the BBC.

Classical teen group The Five from Eastleigh are set to perform with a host of famous faces after winning the WesseX Factor, organised by Wessex Heartbeat.

The band beat nine other singers, dancers, actors and musicians from across Hampshire in the final at the Oasis Academy Lords Hill in Southampton.

As winners they have now earned a place in the Heartbeat 25th Birthday Variety Show at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, alongside stars of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Ruthie Henshall and The Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir.

The 25th Birthday Variety Show is being organised by Wessex Heartbeat, the charity which supports the cardiac unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Since it began fundraising in 1992, Wessex Heartbeat has raised more than £13 million to provide crucial improvements at the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital, as well as cutting-edge equipment, clinical education and research.

The Five are a male vocal group, aged 17-18, who formed three years ago as students at Thornden School in Chandler’s Ford.

They perform songs from hit musicals including Jekyll and Hyde and Les Miserables.

Singer Harry Dunnett said: “This was our first time taking part in a competition and it was such a great evening.

“We now have until April to perfect our act for the show and we will be performing as much as we can until then, starting with the fundraising Hampshire County Council Christmas concert at Romsey Abbey on December 22.”

In the final, The Five were up against Parkewood School of Dance, solo singers Nathan Cannon, Tasha Barney, Ken Wiseman and Olivia Roberts-Singer, the acoustic guitar group Throne Together, the Sylvan School of Dance, Simple Things from Mask Theatre and Giselle Academy of Dance.

The competition was judged by Michael Ockwell, the CEO of the MayflowerTheatre, Paul Wright, the Head of Entertainment at Carnival UK and talent scout Rosalind Fountain.

Harry Dunnett added: “Performing in the Heartbeat Show at The Mayflower will be an incredible opportunity for all of us and we are excited about where it may lead. And knowing our singing is helping others too makes it even better."

Wessex Hearbeat’s chief executive John Munro, said: “We want to thank all the local acts which came forward to audition and those which made it through to the final.

"We have been blown away by their talent, especially The Five whom we believe have a successful future in music.

"We also want to give huge thanks to Carnival UK who will be supporting us by providing top acts for the show from their P&O and Cunard cruise ships.

"Our Birthday Variety Show will be the perfect celebration of our work to date and an exciting start to the next 25 years of fundraising and we hope many, many people will buy tickets to what promises to be an excellent night out."

The Heartbeat 25th Birthday Variety Show will take place at the Mayflower Theatre on April 30, 2017. For tickets visit: www.mayflower.org.uk.
