A HAMPSHIRE mum unexpectedly gave birth to her daughter on the toilet while simultaneously keeping her toddler calm by talking to him over the baby monitor.

Megan Kenway-Head, 21 then had to carry the newborn baby and the placenta downstairs to open the door to the paramedics.

The dramatic arrival of baby Gabrielle came on Monday.

Megan, who woke up at 5.30am with stomach pains, said: “I ran a bath when I first woke up as I had stomach pains and wanted to settle them down.

“I then thought I needed the toilet but I soon felt my daughter crowning between my legs and in the heat of the moment, gave birth to her.

“I was amazed to see her with the umbilical cord still attached to me. I had tried to phone family members beforehand but no one answered their phones.

“I thought she might come early, as my son did too.”

Despite being in labour, Megan also had to talk to her son two-year-old Oscar through a baby monitor during the process as he had woken up.

When Oscar’s dad arrived to take care of him, Megan had already given birth to Gabrielle and was cradling the baby in her arms as she opened the door.

However her labours were not over.

Megan said: “After Oscar left with his dad, I knew I still had to give birth to the placenta so I rushed back upstairs.

I was still waiting for an ambulance and after I’d given birth to the placenta, I then had to go back downstairs to let the paramedics in.

“I had Gabrielle in a towel in one hand and the placenta in a towel in the other. The paramedics came in and I went back upstairs where they let me cut the cord.

“Gabrielle was born at 6.26am and although she suffered hypothermia and shock, as soon as we arrived at the hospital staff made sure she was OK.”

Megan had given birth to her daughter in just over 45 minutes after waking up.

She said she thought the pain had been caused by Braxton Hicks contractions, a tightening of the abdomen that comes and goes but does not cause labour.

Megan was admitted to hospital but returned home on Wednesday.
