Hampshire residents have been warned to not overfill garden waste bins in case they freeze during the winter months.

Eastleigh Borough Council has issued a statement with advice to ensure bins can be emptied.

When temperatures fall below zero, the moisture in garden waste can become stuck in the bin and can prevent emptying.

The council has asked residents to loosen materials inside of the bin before moving it for collection. Overflowing the garden waste can also compact the materials, increasing its likelihood to freeze.

Residents have also been told to keep the lids closed to reduce a moisture build up, as well as keeping the bin inside.
