THE biggest battle we face is ignorance.
That was the message as Southampton Medina Mosque opened its doors for its third Visit My Mosque day.
The nationwide initiative saw more than 150 religious buildings inviting members of other faiths into their place of worship.
Volunteers and mosque officials gave guided tours, answered questions and provided refreshments.
There was also the chance to observe daily prayer.
The community event at the Compton Walk venue followed some of the most controversial first weeks of any American presidency.
Donald Trump announced a ban on citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries entering the US in a move sparking protests around the world.
Rashid Brora, chairman of Southampton Medina Mosque, said: “With national and international events, it is more personal.
“Most of us have no choice over where we are born so all we ask is that everyone be treated equally – most Muslims believe that.”
Vice-chair Javed Ditta added: “The biggest battle we face is ignorance.”
The event was opened by the mayor of Southampton Cathie McEwing, who said: “Southampton is a wonderful, diverse city and I want to keep it that way, and I will fight to keep it that way.
“It shows just how much we can come together.”
