The charity campaign to get a Delays song to number one for frontman Greg Gilbert has received a flurry of donations after it was played on a national radio station.

BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne played out the song Valentine on her show, which fans are hoping to get to the top spot by Valentine’s Day after Greg was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer and secondary lung cancer in December.

A number of donations have been made to the campaign to fund potentially life-saving treatment for Greg since the song was played, with the current total standing at £153,681.

A host of famous faces have backed an ambitious #Valentine2Number1 campaign.

Celebrities including TV presenter Chris Packham, Saints legend Matt Le Tissier and X-Factor winner Matt Cardle have all stated their support for the campaign.

Other famous backers include The Bluetones singer Mark Morris, DJ Eddy Temple-Morris, Primal Screams’ Simone Butler, former Saints player Francis Benali, and Shed Seven’s Rick Witter.

Saints also helped promote the song by playing it at half-time during their match against West Ham at the weekend.

The campaign has had a strong start since its inception, with Valentine topping various download charts and even being featured on popular TV show Soccer AM.

A fundraising gig to coincide with the campaign is being held at The Brook on February 14, and features Birdpen, Dead Rabbits, Novatones and Sean Mcgowan whilst Band of Skulls will be DJing throughout the night.

Tickets are £10 and the doors will open at 7pm ready for an 8pm start.

Dylan Clarke, one of the owners of The Brook, said they were hoping to raise around £5,000 from the gig to donate to Greg’s cause.

Since Greg’s diagnosis, fans from across the globe have come together donating almost £150,000 to help the rockstar pay for a potentially lifesaving cancer treatment, not available on the NHS.
