POLICE are investigating the theft of cigarettes from a convenience store in Southampton.
Burglars smashed their way into the Co-Op store in Foundry Lane between 3am and 4.10am today and stole cigarettes from the shelves.
They also made an unsuccessful attempt to steal alcohol from the store.
The shop is currently cordoned off to enable specialists to examine the premises and obtain any forensic evidence the burglars left behind.
A police spokesman said the intruders gained entry by forcing a rear door. He added that the number of cigarettes stolen in the raid was still being assessed.
Anyone who witnessed the break-in is being urged to contact police on 101.
