A MAN was in hospital in serious condition last night after being attacked ‘with a brick’ in Southampton.

Police cordoned off an area around flats in Wavell Road, Bitterne yesterday following the incident which happened at around 3.40pm.

One resident was told that a  man was hit by a brick in the attack that involved three other men.

The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Southampton General Hospital with serious head injuries.

A statement from Hampshire Police said the 27-year-old was hit on the junction of Wavell Road and Tedder Road in Bitterne.

It added that it is believed the victim knew his attacker.

The statement said: "Officers are looking for two men in connection with the incident.

"They are asking anyone with information about the attack or who witnessed it to call the Western Area Investigation Team on 101 and quote the reference number 44170096258."

A resident who wishes to remain anonymous and lives near the the flats, heard an argument from around the corner while he was out walking his dog.

He said: “I came round to Wavell Road and I could see all of these people stood there. There were a lot of people surrounding him trying to talk to him. I could see blood around the back of his head.”

Other residents report seeing three men who ran into Bitterne precinct, while the victim was left unconscious.

One resident, who did not wished to be named, said: “I hope the cowards are caught.”

He added that the incident has made him feel unsafe.

Police are appealing for any witness to the incident to call 101.
